Product Details:

Helicoil 5405-12 helical thread repair kit is used to repair stripped or damaged tapped holes on metal surfaces. It also repairs stripped threads & creates new threads for fastening applications, providing a strong fastener connection, preventing wear, corrosion or over-torque. This kit is suitable for creating strong internal threadings on all materials, including metals, polymers and composites.

Working Mechanism:

  • Select a drill from Helicoil thread repair kit according to the length of Helicoil insert, screw / bolt & required application to drill out the damaged threading up to the required depth.
  • Then, use an appropriately sized Heli-Coil tap to re-thread the drilled-out hole in the material.
  • Select a Helicoil thread insert from Helicoil thread repair kit and use the supplied installation tool to wind the insert into the hole.
  • Use a tang break-off rod or punch to remove the tang and allow free passage of bolts. Large-sized holes or spark plug inserts require long nose pliers to bend the tang in & out alternately until the tang breaks free.
  • Now, the repaired threaded hole is ready for fastening applications using fasteners, such as bolts.

Features:

  • Helicoil 5405-12 thread repair kit includes a drill, inserts, high-speed steel tap, tang break-off tool and installation tool.
  • It comes in a protective carry case for easy storage & portability.
  • This kit has drill bits of various sizes attached to hand drills for drilling holes on a metal surface.
  • Steel taps are used for creating threadings on the drilled-out holes to provide a pathway for threaded inserts during installation.
  • It has an assortment of same or diversely sized thread inserts for attaching fasteners like bolts. These threaded inserts are installed in the tapped hole using the installation tool in the kit.
  • This set is a free-running variant for reduced stress and material fatigue.
  • The Metric type inserts have a tang at the end of the wire coil (for ease of installation) that is removed with the tang removal tool to allow easy screwing of fasteners.
  • These tools are made of 304 stainless steel for structural strength and durability.
  • It is available in a pack of 18 pieces.

Standards and Approvals:

  • ISO 9001

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. Why are Helicoil inserts larger in diameter than the tapped hole before installation?

A. Diameter of Helicoil thread inserts is slightly larger than the tapped hole diameter before installation as the installation tool reduces the diameter of the leading coil when it applies torque to Helicoil insert's tang, thereby allowing the insert to enter the tapped hole. After installing Helicoil threaded insert, its high tensile stainless steel coil acts like a spring and expands outward onto the metallic material for a strong anchoring connection.

Q. What are some troubleshooting solutions to Helicoil thread repair kit installation problems?

A.

  • If there is a problem while installing a Helicoil thread insert, first match the insert with its correct tap & drill size and then check for wear on them. Helicoil thread plug gages may also be used to check the tapped holes before installing the insert.
  • If Helicoil insert installs perfectly, but there is a problem in winding the mating fastener, match the fastener's dimensions with the diameter & pitch of the installed Helicoil thread insert.

Q. What is the difference between coarse and fine thread spacing types?

A.

  • Coarse: The threads are widely spaced, allowing them to be tightened with fewer turns. They are deep & thick, reducing the possibility of stripping or jamming even if nicked / dirty / rusted.
  • Fine: The threads are spaced closer together to avoid loosening when vibrating. Fine threads are ideal for making precise adjustments because they travel a short distance with each turn.
