Locknuts

Features

  • These nuts are used in place of standard nuts to reduce vibrations in machinery and join soft metals.
  • Flexlock hex locknuts come with flexible tops to provide secure & tight holding with fasteners, by expanding inside them when inserted.
  • They are available in UNC & UNF thread types.
  • These locking nuts have an integral locking device that uses grub screws tightened against a pressure plate, with a thread profile machined into it.
  • When the screw is tightened, the threads are not damaged, and mounting & dismounting are simple.
  • There are no additional washers or nuts required with locknuts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the different types of locknuts?

Raptor Supplies offers locknuts with nylon inserts, jam nuts and bearings.

How do locknuts with nylon inserts work?

  • These locknuts have a nylon insert at the top that creates tension between the nut and the mating component's threads.
  • When threaded onto a shaft or rod, the nut will spin freely until the threads on the host part engage the nylon insert.
  • The mating shaft's threads will displace the nylon insert and create resistance. This resistance prevents the locknut from being moved accidentally.
  • After repeated removal & installation, the insert can wear and become less effective.
  • Replace the nut if it needs to be removed during component disassembly for maximum holding power.

How to install a locknut with nylon inserts?

The locking end of a prevailing torque locknut is installed in a manner such that it engages the mating threads. When installing, the nut should be threaded on freely until the host component's mating threads engage the nylon insert.

How do jam nuts work?

  • Jam nuts use opposing friction against another jam nut or a standard hex nut to lock into place on a threaded shaft or rod.
  • Tighten the first jam nut and then the second nut, which is tightened or jammed against the first nut.
  • It is difficult to properly torque both nuts in this configuration, making it unsuitable for critical applications involving heavy loads.

How do bearing locknuts work?

  • Bearing locknuts, like castellated nuts, require a positive locking action to lock in place.
  • Bearing locknuts and bearing lock washers are used to achieve locking.
  • The machined grooves in the nut's face provide a mating surface for the lock washer's tangs to fold into, locking both components in place.
