Hex Head Lag Screws

Hex head lag screws are used to install dense wooden boards with wooden workpieces or thin metals in heavy-duty woodworking and construction applications. Raptor Supplies offers a wide array of hex head lag screws from brands like Fabory, Snap-Loc, Foreverbolt and Superstrut. These large-sized lag screws have external hex heads & thick stems for easy installation using a wrench, while eliminating slippage & breaking.

Features

  • They are divided mainly into 2 parts: the head and the threaded portion.
  • The external hex head is ideal for installation / removal using a wrench or hex driver.
  • The threaded section generally has spaced threads (coarse threading) and a sharp point for securely gripping wooden boards, studs & soft materials.
  • Snap-Loc lag screws have a fully threaded body with a built-in washer head for distributing loads over a large area.
  • Selected models are partially threaded and have a shoulder instead of a fully threaded shank / body to protect them from loosening. They prevent breakage / bending due to friction-induced overheating or sideway forces.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to install a hex head lag screw?

  • Use a bit having a slightly smaller diameter than the selected lag screw and drill a pilot hole all the way through the surface.
  • Use a ratchet, nut driver or power drill with the right driver bit to install the hex head lag screw.

Do lag bolts need washers?

It is highly recommended to use washers with lag bolts. Using a washer under the screw head increases the surface area in contact with the application surface. This decreases chances of the screw head digging into the surface and cracking it due to heavy load.

What Is the difference between hex head lag screws and wood screws?

  • Wood screws are used to connect only wooden materials whereas hex head lag screws can be used to join wooden materials with other materials as well.
  • Wood screws do not require pilot holes as they thread into the surface, but lag screws require a pre-drilled hole.
  • Lag screws can handle heavier loads than wood screws.

What standards do hex head lag screws abide by?

Hex head lag screws adhere to international standards like ASME, ASTM, SAE & DIN for meeting performance, safety, dimensional & material requirements.
