Finishing Nails

Finishing nails are ideal for applications which require additional strength and holding power, such as crown moulding, panelling & cabinet installations.

Features

  • Finishing nails feature a small, rounded head which is slightly bigger than the nail shank.
  • These nails are less likely to be misplaced by a tight grain of wood. Thus, they can be pushed into hard woods and utilised for angular work.
  • They are strong enough for holding door jambs, crown moulding and baseboards.
  • These nails are also smooth & thin enough to prevent the splitting of thin & narrow pieces of wood.
  • They are not visible on the surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between brad nails and finishing nails?

  • Brad nails are smaller in diameter and often have less holding strength as they are made from a tiny, 18-gauge wire. They are suitable for crafts, panel installation and light decorative trim & moulding.
  • Brad nail lengths range from 1/2 to 2-1/2 inches, whereas finish nail lengths range from 1 to 3-1/2 inches.
  • Brad nails prevent wood splitting better than finishing nails.
  • Finishing nails have higher holding strength than brad nails.

Can you hammer in finishing nails?

  • Yes, but avoid hammer dents or scratches by using a nail set to drive the nail.
  • Use a nail set having the same diameter as the finishing nail.
  • Centre it on top of the nail and hit it with the hammer.
  • Keep hammering the nail until it is approximately 1/8 inches below the surface of the wood.

How long should finish nails be?

Ideally, the length of the nail should be 2-1/2 times the thickness of the wood through which it is being nailed.

How do you hide finishing nails?

  • Use a wood gouge to scoop out a small piece of wood at the area where you intend to drive the finishing nail.
  • Drive the nail into the divot, leaving the chip attached to the wood on one side.

How far apart should finishing nails be?

These finish nails should ideally be placed 16 to 24 inches apart.

What mistakes should be avoided while using finishing nails?

  • Overshooting the nails.
  • Improper positioning of the nail gun.
  • Bruising or denting the wood.
